Llechwedd Mawr Cottage – The Ultimate Rare Hideaway in Wild Wales
If you’re dreaming of a place where the world feels miles away, where silence is truly silent, and the night skies are filled with stars, then Llechwedd Mawr Cottage is your perfect escape. Set deep in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, this rare and remote holiday home offers an unforgettable off-grid experience — without sacrificing modern comfort.
Awarded Greenest Holiday Cottage by Menter Aberystwyth in 2019, Llechwedd Mawr is far more than a holiday cottage. It’s a journey into the untamed heart of Wales, where nature surrounds you and the everyday fades away.
A Wilderness Like No Other
Located within the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere, this hidden gem sits high above the valley, near the wild and rugged slopes of Pumlumon. Surrounded by 760 acres of unspoilt uplands, it offers uninterrupted views of moorland, forest, and distant peaks. From the moment you leave the tarmac and travel along the well-surfaced gravel track, you’ll know you’re heading somewhere truly special. A 4×4 or vehicle with good clearance is recommended — there’s even a ford to cross!
This is splendid isolation at its finest. There are no neighbours, no traffic, no light pollution — just fresh mountain air, bird calls, and the occasional rustle of wildlife. And when night falls, you’ll witness some of the best stargazing Wales has to offer.
Off-Grid, But Not Off-Comfort
Though off-grid, Llechwedd Mawr is far from rustic. Electricity is powered by solar and backed up by a generator, ensuring you have all the essentials — and more.
The stone cottage, originally built in 1886 and once a shelter for local shepherds, has been beautifully restored. Inside, you’ll find:
- A spacious open-plan living/dining area with leather sofas, a wood-burning stove (logs provided), and windows framing the incredible views.
- A fully equipped kitchen with a microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, and washing machine.
- A downstairs bathroom with an over-bath shower, and an upstairs shower room for added convenience.
- Three cozy bedrooms: a double room with a king-size bed, a twin room, and a bunk room — perfect for families or couples travelling together.

You’ll also enjoy modern amenities like Freesat TV, WiFi, DVD player, radio/CD, and essentials like bed linen, towels, and heating included. A travel cot and high chair are available too.
We’ve always recommended using a 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle to reach Llechwedd Mawr, as you’ll need to cross a small ford on a gravel track. If needed, we have a 4×4 available for guests to use for a small fee to help cover running costs.
Outdoor Adventures from the Doorstep
Llechwedd Mawr is a paradise for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers. Step outside and follow trails straight from the cottage into wild landscapes dotted with hidden lakes, mossy woodlands, and the moody Nant-y-moch reservoir nearby. Keep your binoculars handy — the area is rich with wildlife, from soaring red kites to elusive mountain hares.
After a day of hiking or biking, unwind on your enclosed patio terrace, fire up the barbecue, and watch the sun dip behind the hills with a drink in hand. There’s no better place to slow down and reconnect with nature.

Our 10th visit to this little piece of heaven for my birthday weekend. Wonderful week end, just what we needed.
Rain on Sunday eve made it impossible to cross the river on Monday meaning we had an extra night!
Thank you Evan for sharing this place with us all.
